The AA Young Sire Program

In 2003 the nation's leading livestock geneticists, some Angus seedstock and commercial producers and staff from Angus Australia (AA) attended a MLA sponsored workshop which was charged with devising a scheme to double the rate of genetic gain of Australian Angus. After considering a number of options participants decided that a Young Sire Program was the most viable option.

Angus Australia subsequently refined the proposals and launched the initial phase of the scheme in the latter half of 2004. The program has received significant and widespread support with over 50 producers, coming from all Australian states, involved to date. As a result of the interest over 2000 performance recorded females will be available for joining to the selected young sires. Participants have elected a representative committee to oversee and manage the program and contracted a consultant to coordinate it, using funds contributed by bull owners and participating test herds.
