Angus Australia has reduced the cost of participation in the in Angus Sire Benchmarking program in 2010 to $2,500 (plus GST) for Australian bred bulls. CEO, Dr Peter Parnell, said that the cost was reduced to encourage more high quality Australian sires to be nominated for the program. The cut-off date for nominations in 2010 has been extended to Wednesday 25th August. More information….

With the autumn bull selling season in full swing, buyers are being encouraged
to look upon new bulls as investments and to buy only registered performance
recorded bulls to dramatically reduce the risk of buying bulls that could
have a negative effect on a herd. [Read

Angus Australia’s board has requested a review of the pedigrees
of all reported Fawn Calf Syndrome (FCS) cases. As a result of this review
the board decided to notify Angus breeders that Bando 598, and Rambo 465T
of JRS have been identified as FCS carriers and Te Mania Kelp as highly
likely to be a carrier. Due to the difficulties in precisely identifying
and validating suspected FCS affected animals it is not currently possible
for Angus Australia to identify or publish, with sufficient certainty,
any additional FCS carrier animals.
The Australian Veterinary Association kindly gave permission to Angus
Australia to make available to members a paper presented at its 2009 conference,
"Emerging Inherited Diseases of Cattle in Australia". It contains
important information on some of the main genetic conditions currently
identified in Holstein and Angus cattle.

AA OFFICE
CLOSED - TUESDAY 9th MARCH
The Angus Australia Office will be closed on Tuesday 9th March
from 9am to 2pm. This is due to an upgrade in the local electrical sub-station
by Country Energy.
In a move to provide an even better service to members, Angus EBVs will
now be calculated on a monthly basis. This means there will be NO
INTERIM RUNS so you must meet the deadlines to ensure your EBVs
are calculated on the latest data. This is of particular interest to members

AUTUMN INVENTORY FEB 26
A reminder that the cut off for the Autumn Inventory is FRIDAY
FEBRUARY 26 so please have your changes submitted to Angus Australia
by this date.
The continued growth of Certified Australian Angus Beef has created the
new position of Supply Relationships Coordinator based in south-east Queensland.
The position involves working with stakeholders in the technical and marketing
areas as well as auditing the production of Angus beef for the various
Angus programs verified by CAAB. Applications close February 26.

For the first time for a beef breed in Australia, and possibly the world,
Angus Australia has produced trial EBVs for structure, initially for five
legs and feet traits. Until now, EBVs have been available for 17 traits

Admiralty House in Sydney, a fillet of Australian Angus beef was selected
as the main fare. This was most appropriate as Prince William’s
ancestors commencing with Queen Victoria in 1881 have proudly held the
role of Patron of the Aberdeen Angus Society until the current day. These
included The Queen Mother who was Patron for an extraordinary 67 years.

Preliminary research by American scientists Dr. Jon Beever and Dr. David
Steffen supports Australian claims regarding the presence of the non lethal
genetic condition known as Fawn Calf Syndrome (FCS) in a section of the
Angus population. Work is continuing to find a test for the condition.

ANGUSPLUS TOPS $12 MILLION
Last Friday’s AngusPlus online sale resulted in 423 Angus steers
and commercial females grossing $328,630 boosting the 2009 gross to just
under $4 million and the total gross to $12.3 million since AngusPlus
was launched by Angus Australia and Elders in August 2006. At the final
AngusPlus sale for the year, cows and calves sold to $1025 and a line
of 72 weaner steers weighing 353.8 kgs sold for $600 of 170 c/kg. The
first AngusPlus sale in 2010 will be on Friday February 5 with a highlight
on April 9 with the inaugural Landfall Genetics AngusPlus sale for Landfall
clients.
140 FOR ROUNDUP
Over 140 participants from throughout the nation have entered for the
Landfall Angus Youth Roundup at Wodonga Exhibition Centre on January 14
to 17. There is now a waiting list. As well, good entries have been received
for the Te Mania Heifer, New Zealand Exchange and Angus Youth Ambassador
awards with winners announced at the Roundup.

Despite the global financial crisis and droughts in southern Australia,
Angus registrations continued to climb in 2008 reaching 52,369, now almost
