ANGUS
BURGER ‘MAJOR BOOST’ TO WHOLE INDUSTRY & JOHN KILROY ENTERS
MACCAS FOR THE FIRST TIME
MLA’s marketing manager David Thomason describes the success of
McDonald’s Angus burgers as a ‘major industry boost’
while Brisbane’s leading beef restaurateur John Kilroy walks under
the golden arches for the first time and rates the Angus burger as ‘very
good’ and suggests the younger generation now recognizes Angus as
a premium product.
CSIRO
WANTS APR COWS
CSIRO Livestock Industry, Armidale, NSW, is looking to establish an industry
relevant Angus research herd and is looking for approximately two lots
of 25 cows and calves on the APR register for immediate delivery. CSIRO
would prefer the cows to be less than six years of age. Another 50 cows
and calves will be purchased in the New Year. If possible, CSIRO would
like the cows to be rejoined to a registered Angus bull. If you have animals
that may be suitable, please contact Mr Andrew Eichorn on 0414252238 or
andrew.eichorn@csiro.au

EVIDENCE
OF GENETIC CHANGE
Genetic change in the cattle business is a slow and steady process, but
evidence shows it’s happening, and that it’s positive for
beef quality. A recent USA research review found that quantifying the
genetic impact is difficult, but it is definitely a factor in the trend
toward higher quality grades.
ENJOY
THE “ANGUS PREMIUM”
Angus breeders are benefiting from the demand being created by the various
“Angus” brands led by Certified Australian Angus Beef (CAAB).
To ensure you obtain all the Angus benefits it is important to provide
all the required information on the National Vendor Declaration (NVD)
when selling cattle. Industry is recognising that for beef products to
be described as “Angus” the cattle entering the various Angus
programs must be between a minimum of 75% genetically Angus and 100% Angus.
To meet this requirement eligible cattle must be by Angus Bulls out of
either straight bred Angus cows or Angus X cows. Therefore it is important
that Part A of NVD’s be completed accurately. Under the Description
area it is important to state Sire: Angus, Dam Angus or Angus X as the
case may be.
RECORD NEWS
It has been brought to our notice that the $19,000 paid for an APR bull
at the Raff sale at Drillham, Qld, on September 28 was not the record
price for an APR bull as we suggested in the October 28 Angus eNews. We
have since discovered that the APR bull Rennylea A255 sold for $25,000
at the 2007 Rennylea sale to Richard Morgan, Mansfield, Vic. But that’s
not all; at the May 1991 Hazeldean sale, and APR bull Hazeldean J453 sold
for $27,000 to Ed Blackadder of the now dispersed Wallaroy Angus. So to
the best of our knowledge Hazeldean now holds the APR record.
RED
MEAT AND THE ENVIRONMENT
As a beef producer, are you concerned about the greenhouse gas situation?
The MLA has produced a brochure covering many areas of how our industry
fits with the Australian environment.
PLEASE
CHECK COMING EVENTS

list is used as the master list for all of Angus Australia’s printed
and electronic publications.
