HERD BOOK REGISTER (HBR)

The Herd Book Register (HBR) is the highest quality level of seedstock recording provided by Angus Australia. The HBR enables members to record pedigree and performance information on their Herd Book eligible purebred Angus cattle for inclusion in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN. To ensure correctness of pedigree, all animals registered from overseas have been Blood Typed, and in future will be DNA Typed, prior to entry. Also, random parent verification using Blood or DNA Typing is regularly conducted. Only HBR registered animals are accepted for registration in corresponding overseas Angus Herd Books.

Who can use the HBR?

All Full Members of Angus Australia are eligible to record animals in the HBR and participate in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN. The pedigree and performance information provided by breeders is used to estimate Breeding Values (EBVs) for a range of growth, fertility and carcase traits. Pedigree links between herds enable the calculation of EBVs that can be used for Angus across-herd comparisons. EBVs can be used to make more informed mating and culling decisions to improve herd productivity and to target specific market requirements.

Pedigree Performance Certificates for HBR animals are issued by the Angus Society on request. In addition, as a participant in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN you will receive EBV reports after each batch of performance data is submitted. This information is valuable documentation of the genetic potential of your animals.

Each animal submitted for registration in the HBR must be the progeny of a sire and of a dam each of which are also registered in the HBR or in some other register approved for the purpose by Angus Australia, for example, a recognized overseas Angus association.

Only animals which are black or red in colour are eligible for entry in the HBR.

Each animal to be recorded must be uniquely and individually identified through a combination of tattooing, fire or freeze branding and National Livestock Identification electronic devices.

For further details on Angus Australia Regulations for recording in the HBR see Angus Society Breeding Regulations.

Annually members are provided with a Herd Inventory list of all recorded females 2 years and over which are regarded as “active” ie. for which Inventory fees are due and if paid, may have a calf recorded for that female in that year. The Inventory list is in the form of a “Calf Record Form” which provides space for subsequent calf details to be completed and returned to Angus Australia. These details include Calf Ident, Sire Ident, birth date, birth weight (optional) and calving ease score (optional).

Following the notification of calf details on the Calf Record Form breeders are sent further forms for entry of subsequent performance details (200-Day Wt, 400-Day Wt, etc.) for inclusion in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN.

Recording details may be submitted to Angus Australia either on the paper Calf Record Form or electronically. A rebate of $1.10 per animal (less than six months of age when submitted for registration) or $0.55 per animal (more than six months of age when submitted for registration) applies for error free input of calf registration data provided electronically in standard format (via email or computer disk). See Recording Pedigree and Performance Information for further details.

What does it cost to use the HBR?

An annual Herd Inventory fee of $22.00 (includes GST) is payable for all females 2 years and older recorded on the HBR.

Breeders wishing to participate in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN must pay an annual GROUP BREEDPLAN enrolment fee of $110 (includes GST).
