5. HERD INVENTORY . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Go to Top

5.1 Commencing 1st January 2003 the Society will move to a ‘Split Inventory System’. All breeding females falling 2 years and over within the inventory year (1st January to 31st December) will be split into two calving seasons, Autumn (January 1 – June 30) and Spring (July 1 – December 31). Inventory Fees will be invoiced accordingly. Females for which the annual Herd Inventory fees are paid will be designated as “Active”.

5.2 Inactive females may be reinstated to “Active” status by the payment of a Reinstatement Fee plus the current Herd Inventory fee. Reinstatement to “Active” status allows registration of the current year’s progeny only.

5.3 A Female Inventory List will be provided by Angus Australia to member for each calving season showing the registration status of all “Active” females.

5.4 No calves can be registered for a particular calving season until all Herd Inventory fees are paid for that season and the “Active” list of females is finalised by the member.

5.5 Late Payment Fees will be applied if Herd Inventory fees are not paid by the prescribed dates.

5.6 A 50% reduction in Herd Inventory Fees for non-calving 2-year-old females is available in cases where members provide an annual Statutory Declaration stating that environmental constraints prevent the calving of heifers in their herd before 3 years of age.

(i) The Society may extend this concession on application from members where a small number of individually nominated animals are given supplementary feed for showing and subsequently calve before 3 years of age.

(ii) The full inventory fee will be charged on all the 2 year old heifers in that herd for that year if more than 10% of heifers have calves.

5.7 A 100% reduction in Herd Inventory Fees for drought affected non-calving 2-year-old females is available in cases where members provide an annual Statutory Declaration and a list of animals at fating time stating that drought conditions prevent the calving of heifers in the herd at 3 years of age.

5.8 Where a female is the subject of a lease agreement the lessee will be liable for payment of the prescribed Herd Inventory fees during the lease period.

5.9 Following the joining of females each year, members shall provide Angus Australia with the joining sire details for all “Active” females on the Mating Details Form or other format approved by Angus Australia. Where available, the joining details will subsequently be pre-printed on the following years Calf Record Forms, where the breeder can record any corrections and/or re-joining details.

5.10 If the payment for invoiced Herd Inventory has not been received by the Society within 2 months of the prescribed date the females invoiced for the period will be made inactive.

5.11 Where a female is multiply owned, each owner will pay the full inventory fee for the female.

6. REGISTRATION OF ANIMALS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Go to Top

6.1 The recorded owner or lessee of the dam (or recipient dam) of an animal at the date when the animal was born will be designated the Breeder of that animal.

6.2 The registration of animals is subject to the receipt of an application signed by the Breeder, or an authorised signatory of the Breeder’s membership.

6.3 Applications for registration shall be submitted on a Calf Record Form, or other format approved by the Society and must include such particulars as Angus Australia shall require in respect of each calf.

6.4 Applications for registration will only be accepted for progeny of females that were “Active” in the inventory year in which the progeny are born.

6.5 Animals submitted for registration in any of Angus Australia’s registers are to be recorded with the Society within 12 months from date of birth otherwise the prescribed late calf recording fees shall apply.

6.6 Applications for registration will only be accepted if Angus Australia is satisfied that the information provided is accurate and fulfils the requirements of these Regulations. No warranties express or implied in law or in equity will be accepted as to the accuracy of information provided by members.

6.7 The Society may refuse to accept an application for registration if the member has any overdue fees or charges payable to Angus Australia.

6.8 Progeny of animals with “shared ownership” can only be registered under one prefix.

6.9 It is the responsibility of the Breeder to take the necessary steps to assure the accuracy of the pedigree, and of any other information provided to Angus Australia, in relation to an animal submitted for registration.

6.10 If it is found that the particulars provided in the application for registration of any animal are incorrect Angus Australia may cancel the registration of that animal and its descendants, and/or correct the recorded information as required.

6.11 Unique individual identification must be maintained for all animals recorded with Angus Australia.

6.12 The Breeder will provide a unique Animal Identifier (Ident.) for each animal submitted for registration. This will include the Breeder’s Herd Identifier, a breeding year letter, and an animal number. The breeding year letter will denote the year in which the calf was born, and the animal number shall so far as is practicable indicate the order in which the calf was born in relation to other calves born in the same herd in that breeding year.

6.13 Each breeding year shall commence on the 1st January and end on the following 31st December. For the first year following that in which the letter "D" is used the letter "E" will be used as the next breeding year letter. Thereafter the letters in their normal sequence throughout the alphabet shall be used to denote the respective succeeding breeding years (with the exception of "O" and "I"). For example, the letter 'D' shall be used throughout the year 2008 as signifying the breeding year ending 31st December 2008.

6.14 Twins or calves from other multiple births are eligible for registration providing all other registration requirements are met and the application for registration states the calf is a twin or of other multiple birth.

6.15 If a name is allotted to an animal tendered for registration it shall include the breeder’s prefix. The name, including the prefix and any numeral forming part of the name, shall not exceed thirty characters. The Society may refuse to allow any name that it considers to be misleading, misapplied or contrary to the interests of the members of Angus Australia.

6.16 Names of established families, of established studs, or of celebrated animals, may only be applied to an animal having some ancestral claim to such use.

6.17 If family names are used descendants shall not be named serially. The family name may be used followed by the animal’s year letter and tattoo number.

6.18 The name of every red Angus animal shall include the separate word RED either within the name, or in brackets at the end of the name.

6.19 The name of an animal shall not be changed after registration;

(i) without the prior approval of the Society or;

(ii) when the animal is more than three year old or;

(iii) where the animal has more than five progeny registered.

6.20 A Pedigree-Performance Certificate will be issued by Angus Australia for any registered animal on written request from the recorded owner of the animal.

6.21 Where an animal has multiple owners the Pedigree-Performance Certificate shall indicate the percentage interest in the animal of each owner.

6.22 An application for registration of any animal that is red in colour shall indicate such fact.

6.23 An animal that tests positive to the DNA Red Coat Colour test, or that has three or more red progeny within the owner's herd, shall be designated as carrying the Red Gene. An animal that tests negative to the DNA Red Coat Colour test will be designated as not carrying the Red Gene.

6.24 Animals known to be carriers of genes for the following congenital conditions are not be eligible for registration:

(i) Mannosidosis

(ii) Dwarfism

(iii) Osteopetrosis (marble-bone disease)

(iv) Muscular Hypertrophy (double muscling)

(v) Syndactyl (mule foot)

(vi) Heterochromia Irides (white eye)

(vii) Hydrocephalus.

6.25 The following points apply to the registration of a cloned calf:

(i) To be eligible for registration both the genetic donor and clone must be DNA typed. The DNA of the clone must be compared to the DNA of the genetic donor and meet the probability of exclusion values.

(ii) The clone will carry the name of the genetic donor as well as the Herd Identifier, year letter and unique animal sequence number of the clone (in the registering herd) and the suffix of (CLN).

(iii) The Animal Identifier (Ident) will consist of the registering herd’s Herd Identifier, breeding year letter and the unique animal sequence number.

(iv) In order for a breeder who is not the owner of the genetic donor to register a cloned animal, written consent from all owners of the genetic donor must accompany the cloned animal's application for registration.

7. ANGUS HERD BOOK REGISTER (HBR) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Go to Top

7.1 The Angus Herd Book Register (HBR) includes the “Progeny Register” referred to in the Memorandum and Articles of Association.

7.2 Each animal submitted for registration in the HBR must be the progeny of a sire and of a dam each of which are also registered in the HBR or in some other register approved for the purpose by Angus Australia.

7.3 When the sire of an animal is changed when the animal is more than 12 months of age, a DNA paternity verification (by an approved laboratory) would be required. When the dam of an animal is changed when the animal is more than 12 months of age, a full DNA parent verification (by an approved laboratory) would be required.

7.4 No animal shall be eligible for entry in the HBR if it shows signs of developing or having a horn or scur; or if it is of a colour foreign to the Angus Breed; or if it has white skin above the underline, or on or in front of the navel scar or on a leg or foot (unless it is a birthmark).

7.5 Only animals which are black or red in colour shall be eligible for entry in the HBR.

7.6 Every calf submitted for registration in the HBR shall, prior to weaning, be either:

(i) tattooed in the left ear with the registered tattoo mark of its breeder; and, in either the left or right ear with a breeding year letter and animal number; or
(ii) have an approved National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) tag applied to the right ear; or
(iii) a freeze or fire brand including the registered brand symbol, relevant year letter and animal number

In addition, to the above, every animal recorded in the HBR shall have a second form of permanent identification applied by 18 months of age. This shall be in the form of either:

(i) the registered tattoo mark of its breeder, breeding year letter and animal number; or
(ii) a freeze or fire brand including the registered brand symbol, relevant year letter and animal number; or
(iii) an approved NLIS device (eg. electronic tag or rumen capsule).

Where a NLIS device is used as part of the animals identification its actual visual number (not the RFID number) must be recorded with Angus Australia . If an animal’s NLIS device is replaced for any reason, Angus Australia must be notified of the new number within 30 days of application.

7.7 Where a tattoo is difficult to read, a combination of the brand, approved NLIS device or tattoo can be used to identify the animal.

7.8 No two calves from the same herd shall be tattooed or branded with the same number.

7.9 An animal registered in the HBR shall not be re-tattooed or re-branded without prior permission from Angus Australia. Should it be necessary to re-apply tattoo marks and/or fire brands to an animal they shall be re-applied in the presence of another Full Member, or official appointed by Angus Australia, who shall subsequently provide Angus Australia with written confirmation of the procedure.

7.10 Calves must be notified for entry in the HBR within twelve (12) months of their date of birth, after which entry will normally be subject to the payment of a late calf-recording fee and the provision of satisfactory parentage verification (at a level specified by the Board).

7.11 When a member downgrades a HBR registered animal to another register and subsequently sells that animal the purchaser cannot reinstate the animal into the HBR unless they were the Breeder of that animal.

7.12 Animals initially registered in another register of Angus Australia can be upgraded to the HBR for a prescribed fee provided both the sire and dam were initially recorded in the HBR, and a DNA type parent verification as certified by an approved laboratory is provided.

7.13 The Society reserves the right in any circumstances to require the DNA mannosidosis test to be carried out on any animal registered or submitted for registration in the HBR.

7.14 A number of overseas AI sires will be subject to DNA mannosidosis testing prior to their acceptance into the HBR. The number to be tested will be determined by the Board from time to time.

7.15 The Society may request DNA typing to verify parentage of any animal registered or submitted for registration in the HBR at Angus Australia's expense.

7.16 (i) It shall be a requirement for the registration of all Herd Book calves born after 31/12/2002 that their sire be DNA fingerprinted by an approved laboratory.

(ii) All Herd Book male calves born after 31/12/2002 shall be subject to DNA paternal verification, by the AA approved laboratory but only if they are to be used as sires for the production of calves to be registered in the Herd Book.

(iii) All Herd Book embryo transplant (ET) donor dams flushed after 31/12/2002 shall be DNA fingerprinted by an approved laboratory.

(iv) ET Calves born after 31/12/2002 and subsequently registered in the ASA Herd Book due to live or genetic importations will be subject to (i), (ii) and (iii) except where this proves impossible.

7.17 Where the parentage verification for an animal recorded in the HBR fails then Angus Australia shall de-register the animal until its correct parentage is determined and verified. The Society may request parentage verification of additional animals in the herd of the Breeder, at the Breeder's expense.

7.18 A DNA type parent verification by an approved laboratory will normally be required before permission will be granted for the application of a different tattoo or brand on an animal registered in the HBR, or where the current owner of the animal is not the original breeder of that animal.

7.19 No overseas or imported animal shall be registered in the HBR unless it is eligible for registration in an approved overseas register.

7.20 An application for registration in the HBR of an imported or overseas animal must include the following particulars:

(i) name of the animal,

(ii) tattoo mark and animal number,

(iii) Herd Book number recorded with overseas Association,

(iv) three generation pedigree,

(v) date of birth,

(vi) evidence that the animal is registered in the country of origin, in the form of a Registration Certificate, or registration information provided by the country of origin’s Angus association website listing service.

(vii) Imported bulls or AI sires will need a DNA Profile (tested at the AA approved laboratory) on file and O/S sires and dams of imported embryos will need a DNA Type Certificate as certified by an approved laboratory.

(viii) Test results to show that Imported bulls & AI sires are free from Mannosidosis.

7.21 The Society will normally require a letter of authority from an overseas owner before any overseas animal can be recorded.

7.22 A calf from an embryo imported after 1/1/2001 can only be registered in the HBR if both the sire and donor dam are also registered in the HBR.

7.23 The initials of the name of the country of origin shall be used with the words “IMP” at the end of the name of all imported animals. A calf born during transit of its dam will be considered to have been born in Australia.

7.24 When the sire of an animal is changed when the animal is more than 12 month of age, a DNA paternity verification (by an approved laboratory) would be required. When the dam of an animal is changed when the animal is more than 12 month of age, a full DNA parent verification (by an approved laboratory) would be required.

15. DE-REGISTRATION . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Go to Top

15.1 The Society may de-register an animal if:

(i) a written request is received from its recorded owner to de-register the animal; or,

(ii) the recorded owner has debts outstanding for more than 60 days after demand for payment has been made by the Society; or,

(iii) it is found that the animals registration is contrary to these Regulations; or ,

(iv) the animal is sold or otherwise disposed of, and no valid application for transfer of the animal is received by Angus Australia, or if the prescribed transfer fee is not paid.

15.2 A member who has deregistered an animal may subsequently apply for its re-registration.

16. DISPERSALS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Go to Top

Angus Australia recognises that it is impossible to make provision in the regulations for every event that could occur and impact on the clearance of animals at a ‘dispersal’ or ‘partial dispersal’ sale.

As a result Angus Australia encourages potential purchasers to ascertain from ‘dispersal’ or ‘partial dispersal’ vendors what is meant by a ‘dispersal’ or ‘partial dispersal’ sale.

17. ANGUS GROUP BREEDPLAN . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Go to Top

17.1 An annual enrolment and the prescribed fee applies for the period from 1st January to 31st December.

17.2 Data will only be accepted from members for inclusion in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN for animals that are recorded in one of the registers provided by Angus Australia.

17.3 Data submitted for inclusion in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN will be analysed together with data from other herds and relevant overseas genetic evaluation information to estimate Breeding Values (EBVs) and other statistics. This data will remain the property of Angus Australia and will be used for research and/or the publication or dissemination of EBVs on individual animals.

17.4 The Society retains copyright on all information generated from the Angus pedigree-performance database (including pedigrees, EBVs and accuracies). Inaccurate or misleading use of this information in advertising and promotional material may contravene the Trade Practices Act.

17.5 In enrolling (or re-enrolling) in Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN members will agree to the following conditions. Violation of these conditions may result in the cancellation of enrolment.

(i) Contemporary groups will be managed in such a way to ensure that all animals allocated to a particular group have an equal opportunity to express their performance. Animals that are given preferential treatment, or are sick or disadvantaged will be allocated to separate contemporary groups. No animal will be excluded from a contemporary group on the basis of its individual performance.

(ii) All performance data will be measured using appropriate equipment (and not estimated). Breeders will ensure the correct functioning of scales and other equipment used to measure performance.

(iii) EBVs and accuracies included in sale catalogues and advertisements will be current and accurate. A consistent set of EBVs and accuracies will be used for all animals in a particular sale group (i.e. selected figures will not be omitted for individual animals). All non-zero EBVs will be shown with either a clear positive (+) or negative (-) sign.

(v) Wherever EBVs are included in advertisements and sale catalogues acknowledgement of the source of the EBVs will also be included (e.g. January 2006 Angus GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs; Angus Interim GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs, April 21st 2006). The current average EBV’s for the reference birth year as provided in Angus Australia Website will also be included in sale catalogues.

(vi) Parental or ancestor EBVs shall not be used in lieu of individual animal EBVs in advertisements and sale catalogues.

(vii) All overseas genetic evaluation information and/or raw data included with EBVs in advertisements or sale catalogues will be clearly labelled.

17.6 Members will not be supplied with a Breedplan herd report if no performance data has been submitted in the previous two years.
