The Angus Double Premium
The Angus double premium sounds like something you would order at a fast food restaurant, but in reality it's something producers can achieve financially for their own businesses.
As the market has shown, Angus commercial cattle can achieve a per kilogram premium over and above other cattle breeds. To obtain an even greater price per kilogram or what we like to call, the Angus 'double premium' producers can sell their cattle through the MSA system or become EU accredited.
Last year Angus Australia in conjunction with Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) held MSA seminars on the Eastern Seaboard to assist with the upcoming change of a larger supermarket to MSA grading. These informative seminars showed how easily producers could comply with and register for the MSA system.
Angus Australia and the MLA plan to conduct a special Webinar online later in 2012 for those who could not make it to the MSA seminars, but in the meantime, there are two upcoming MSA seminars to be held in Goondiwindi and Dalby, Queensland very soon. Click Here
In many cases you may be already complying with the MSA guidelines, making registering for MSA just a formality. Registration is free and it only takes a few minutes to complete the required form.
Information on MSA is available from the MLA web site - click here
Alternatively, EU accreditation may be the path you decide to embark upon to achieve your Angus 'double premium'.
With the grainfed tariff free quota rising from 20,000 tonne to 48,200 tonne there may be increased demand for EU accredited cattle.
The European Union Cattle Accreditation scheme is administered by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQUIS). Further information and helpful links can be found in the recent Angus Australia article EU Accreditation - Obtaining Premiums - click here.
There are several 3 hour EU workshops being hosted by the Department of Primary industries in Victoria in late February to mid March. These will be held in Yea, Benalla, Corryong, Bairnsdale, Maffra, Warragul, Geelong, Camperdown, Hamilton and Kyneton.

Obtaining those extra cents per kilogram can really give you 'the icing on the cake' and once complying with the guidelines of either of these two systems you may find the Angus 'double premium' is very tasty indeed.
