The inaugural Verified Black Angus Beef BBQ Competition is underway, with the ten crews from around Australia already in the midst of their BBQing!
Taking place at Hovell Tree Park, Albury, the event is the first of its kind to Angus Australia and will showcase Australia’s top pitmasters with Australia’s best Verified Black Angus Beef.
The event is open to all and will be a day of good food with even better company featuring meat supplied by the Verified Black Angus beef brands NH Foods Angus Reserve, Jack’s Creek Black Angus, Ranger’s Valley Black Onyx and Three Creek Beef. Major sponsors include NH Foods and Jack’s Creek.

The Verified Black Angus Beef BBQ Competition will be an Australian BBQ Alliance sanctioned event and will host 10 of the best and brightest BBQ teams from around the country in a challenge for a share in $10,000 worth of prizes.
The following teams will be flaring up the BBQs at this year’s competition!
Adam Roberts is a Co-Founder of the Australasian Barbecue Alliance and its current General Manager. He is the Author of the ‘Ribs’ cookbook and the Director and Producer of Beyond the Flame – an online documentary series on world barbecue with over 1,000,000 online views. Adam Roberts has featured in more than 25 recipes, BBQ tutorial and promotional videos since 2016.
Currently ranked 23rd in Australia, Piggy is one of the highest ranked solo cook teams in Australia. Piggy has accomplished Reserve Grand Championships in Australia – 2017, Reserve Grand Championships in New Zealand 2018, 3rd overall at Sydney Kingsford Invitational 2018, 4th overall at Parramatta Big BBQ Battle 2016 and 4th overall at Smoke in Broke 2018. Piggy has won 1st, 2nd or 3rd place trophies in Lamb, Lamb Shanks, Brisket, Pork, Pork Ribs, Chicken, Oysters and Burgers, taking home over $10,000 in cash, trophies and prizemoney to date.
Smokeface Grillahs are a BBQ team based out of South East Victoria. Jye, Justin, James and Luke make up the troublesome foursome that are the core of the team. This will be their fourth year on the ABA circuit with their greatest success coming in the 2018 season finishing 2nd overall in the ABA team championship.
They have accomplished 2nd overall ABA Team of the year 2018, 2018 Grand Champions at Big Boys Toys, Kingsford Invitational, Port Macquarie BBQ Wars and Western Hotel, 2018 Reserve Grand Champions Meatstock Melbourne and Yaks Melbourne BBQ Festival and the 2017 Reserve Grand Champion St Helens.
Smokin Hot n Saucy
Smokin Hot n Saucy is based in the Hunter Valley NSW as a food truck based company of the same name owned by Robert and Randi Thraves. Randi is from Texas and which is where the teams techniques and training comes from. They have 3 little kids and Texas BBQ is their full time job!
They have received a number of Grand Championships and Reserve Grand Championships over multiple years. Smokin Hot n Saucy is the current 2018 Meatstock Grand champions of Sydney.
Grilla’s in the Mist
Two mates, McGilla & Wookie starting off in the competitive BBQ/Smoking arena in March 2016 after a few years cooking for family and friends at home on pellet smokers.
Together they have received Grand Champions at Australian Barbecue Alliance Championship in Hervey Bay and Reserve Champion at various other events. They have secured first places in every category on the ABA circuit. The team won the chicken and pork categories at Sydney Meatstock and recently won the Tamworth Steak Cookoff Association.
Full Throttle Bar B Q
Full Throttle Bar B Q is based in Newcastle with 3 members, Paul the Boss, Mick the Brisket King and Louie the Sous Chef. They fell in love with competition barbequing after going to Meatstock Sydney 2017. Six months later they competed in their first comp. They believe BBQ is all about having a great time and cooking some great food. The teams top 3 accomplishments include 2nd placed Brisket at Meatstock Auckland 2019, 1st place Brisket and Brisket Kings at Port Macquarie 2018 Blues and BBQ Festival and Grand Champions 2018 Central Coast BBQ Festival.
Angus Reserve Barbeque Crew
The Angus Reserve Barbeque Crew hail from the small NSW regional town of Wingham. This team of passionate self-taught pitmasters began competing on the Australian BBQ circuit in 2016 and comprises of of Grant, Fiona & Grace Coleman, Ashley Turner, Stephen Cooke and Mark Bateman.
The Angus Reserve Barbeque Crew hold an impressive number of Grand Championships and RGCs, but one of their proudest accomplishments came in 2018 when they represented Australia at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo World Championship BBQ Contest in the USA. The team took out 2nd place in Brisket using Angus Reserve Beef from their local processing facility, Wingham Beef Exports, which Grant is the general manager and finished an outstanding 13th place overall. The team competed in over 18 competition events on the Australasian BBQ Alliance calendar and earned 3rd overall.
Rollin Smoke BBQ
Rollin Smoke BBQ is a American Style BBQ Catering and Competition BBQ Team made up of team members Lukas Armstrong and Shane Harris. Rollin Smoke BBQ have been competing since 2015, and have a number of Grand Champions wins under their belts.
Rollin Smoke BBQ are 1 of the only few teams to finish in the top 10 every year since the ranking started.
They are one of the most experienced teams, averaging 10+ competitions per year, traveling between Melbourne and Bundaberg.
Last year they had a record equalling 4 GC and only missed the 5th by 2 points.
TexAus BBQ is 4 good mates Adam, Johny, Darren and Guss from Lake Macquaire. They have been flying the low and slow BBQ flag for the last 5 years. 6 years ago whilst visiting friends in Texas their low and slow BBQ passion began, hence the name TexAus BBQ. Their custom made trailer pit, made by Silvercreek Smokers in Melbourne, is one of a kind and catches everyone’s eye. They competed in the first Port Macquarie comp and place 2nd in brisket. They have won a number of Grand Championships, performed on the live stage at Meatstock and traveling back to Houston TX this year and competed at Houston Rodeo and BBQ comp.
Natural Born Grillers
Pam, Andrew, Dean and Dana are the Natural Born Grillers, competitive BBQ team, owners of Australia’s favourite barbecue store The Que Club and all round foodies. This will be the first time they have competed in while, as they have been pursuing their love of barbecue through The Que Club. Natural Born Grillers still managed to finish 9th overall in the ABA points chase and 3rd the year prior. In recent years the Natural Born Grillers have taken out a number of prizes including the 2018 A&E BBQ PIT-BOSS at Meatstock Melbourne, Grand Champions of the 2017 Creekside BBQ Battle and 3rd Place overall at Melbourne KCBS in 2016, to name a few.
Aussie Pit Boys
The Aussie Pit Boys (Trevor & Alan) went to school together & have been friends for over 30 years and have been competing for 4yrs . Their a family oriented team including their our 2 wives & 2 sons that come to all our events. They are located at Summerland Point on the NSW Central Coast & have competed in 12 competitions in New Zealand & the United States. Their passion for BBQ started to allow them to catch up more often & chat over a few beers & what better way to do it that than to turn their competitions into family holidays & weekends away. The team have won numerous Grand Champion and Reserve Champion trophies with the latest being Meatstock Auckland & Meatstock Melbourne. They are currently the number 2 ranked team in Australia & looking forward to the Angus Australia Competition in Albury on 22nd May.
