The 2018 Thomas Foods International Angus Youth Roundup Special Dinner Dance and Auction was held on Saturday 13th January at the Albury Commercial Club. 340 people were in attendance for the special event where participants, parents, committee and Angus breed enthusiasts were able to come together for an enjoyable night.
The night made possible by our generous sponsors Charles Sturt University Graham Centre, the Victorian State Committee and the Red Angus Society of Australia, saw dinner guests enjoy time with their Angus family and listen to an array of speakers followed by disco entertainment.
An important part of the special dinner dance was to award the Cornell Shield, the Stewart Award, and the prestigious Trans-Tasman Exchange Scholarship.
The Cornell Shield, in memory of the tireless work done by David and Kathleen Cornell to set up the Australian Angus Youth movement, was awarded to Murk Schoen, Coordinator of the 2018 Roundup who successfully ran a smooth and enjoyable Roundup.
Angus Australia’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Diana Wood commended Murk for the outstanding job he did in the organisation of the 2018 event.
‘To see someone like Murk, backed by his wife Kate and his committee run such a successful event was fantastic. Having watched both Murk and Kate start their Angus Youth journey a number of years ago as Roundup participants, to now coordinating the event is great to see and should provide today’s participants to stay involved,’ she said.
The Stewart award recognising someone who has contributed a large amount of time to the Angus Youth program was awarded to Jasmin Nixon.
Jasmin has many number of years, having been a participant and then becoming a committee member.
‘Jasmin’s wealth of knowledge and passion for the program have been an asset to Angus Youth and for the Angus Youth program to be able to help shape young leaders in the industry like Jasmin is a credit to the program,’ said Angus Australia, Director, Dean Fredericksen upon presenting Jasmin with this award.
The final presentation of the night was the Trans – Tasman Exchange Scholarship, which enables its recipient the opportunity to travel to New Zealand and experience their beef industry, with this year’s award going to Steph Frankham.
Steph was recognised by Angus Youth Consultative Committee member, James Knight as ‘A commendable young woman who is certainly going places with her career’.
As always a highlight of the night was the Auction which raises funds to support the continual growth of Angus Youth. The auction comprised of 13 live auctioned lots making a combined total of $18,670 and then 19 Lots in the Silent Auction generating $2,330 making a total $21,000 raised in support of Angus Youth.
All lots were kindly donated by members of Angus Australia and supporters alike. The Angus Youth Roundup Committee and Angus Australia would sincerely like to thank the generous people and businesses that provided items for the auction.
Donations by these people and subsequently the purchases of these products go a long way in supporting the Angus Youth Roundup and various other Angus Youth activities, helping support youth development, education and research programs
The various Angus Youth programs are designed to encourage and assist the involvement of young people in the Australian beef industry, to provide professional development opportunities for young beef producers and to assist in conducting research, development and education programs for the of Angus breeders and the wider Australian Beef Industry.
