In celebration of National Science week it is timely to put a spotlight on all the science-based initiatives here at Angus Australia.
The ASBP is a major initiative of Angus Australia with support from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and industry partners such as Vetoquinol, Rangers Valley Feedlot and John Dee Abattoir.
With the ASBP, Angus Australia aims to generate progeny test data on modern Angus bulls, particularly for hard to measure traits such as feed efficiency, abattoir carcase measurements, meat quality attributes and female reproduction; generate data for the validation and refinement of Angus BREEDPLAN; and build a comprehensive phenotype and genotype database on Australian Angus animals for genomic technology validation, research and development.

Angus BREEDPLAN is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus infused beef cattle. Angus BREEDPLAN uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility).
Angus BREEDPLAN includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and New Zealand Angus Association databases to evaluate the genetics of animals across Australia and New Zealand.

Developed in collaboration with Zoetis Animal Genetics, Angus HeiferSELECT is a genomic selection tool to help inform the selection of Angus replacement females (87.5% Angus content or greater) in a commercial beef breeding operation.

December 2017 heralded a new era for the genetic evaluation of Angus cattle in Australia with the implementation of a new and improved approach for incorporating genomic, or DNA information into the calculation of Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).
The new approach, utilising single step analytical software, simultaneously utilises genomic, pedigree and performance information, placing appropriate emphasis on all available sources of information, to generate the best possible prediction of each animal’s breeding value.

One of our newest advancements to angus.tech the Angus Mating Predictor allows breeders to design their mating program by calculating the expected EBVs, EBV accuracies and selection index values of the progeny that would result from a specific mating, or a range of matings.
