Understanding the Total Breeding Index

Total breeding value estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability in a typical commercial self replacing herd, and identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems.

The Total breeding value  assists in making “balanced” selection decisions, taking into account the relevant growth, carcase & fertility attributes of each animal to identify animals that are most suitable for use within a particular commercial enterprise.

Higher Total breeding value genetic predictions identifies animals that will improve overall profitability in the majority of commercial grass and grain finishing beef production systems.

Total breeding value is similar to the Angus Breeding Index published in the TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation, with balanced emphasis placed across each trait group.
