5. Structural Breeding Values


An animals structure plays a critical role in its performance across a range of other traits. From growth to reproduction, if the structure of the animal is compromised so may its performance. Structural breeding values are unique for Angus BREEDPLAN breeding values as the most desirable score is in the middle of the breeding value range.

Performance recording for structural traits must be recorded by an accredited technician.

Finding an accredited technician   

Structural Soundness scores for Angus BREEDPLAN must be collected by an accredited technician. Structural soundness scores not collected by an accredited technician will not be included in Angus BREEDPLAN.

Target Front Feet Angle (FA)

Front Feet Angle EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in desirable front feet angle.   Front Feet Angle EBVs are calculated from a subjective assessment of feet angle (strength of pastern, depth of heel) by an accredited assessor when animals are less than 750 days of age and are expressed in percentage units.  Higher Front Feet Angle EBVs indicate an animal is expected to produce a higher percentage of progeny with desirable front feet angle.

 


Rear Feet Angle (RA)

Rear Feet Angle EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in desirable rear feet angle.  Rear Feet Angle EBVs are calculated from a subjective assessment of feet angle (strength of pastern, depth of heel) by an accredited assessor when animals are less than 750 days of age and are expressed in percentage units.  Higher Rear Feet Angle EBVs indicate an animal is expected to produce a higher percentage of progeny with desirable rear feet angle.


Collecting Structural Soundness Scores 

Subjective structural soundness scores collected by an accredited scorer when animals are younger than 750 days are used to calculate Structural Soundness EBVs within Angus BREEDPLAN. Structural scores can only be analysed in Angus BREEDPLAN for animals that have a prior 400 or 600 day weight included in the analysis.

Structural soundness scores for Angus BREEDPLAN are collected using the Beef Class Structural Assessment System. Scores are collected for 5 traits related to feet and leg structure using a 1 – 9 scoring system, where a score of 5 is considered ideal.

Structural soundness scores for Angus BREEDPLAN must be collected by an accredited technician. Structural soundness scores not collected by an accredited technician will not be included in Angus BREEDPLAN.

Animals should be scored either prior to, or on the same day as the collection of a 400 or 600 day weight for Angus BREEDPLAN.

While more than one set of structural score information can be recorded for an individual animal, Angus BREEDPLAN is only analysing the first set of structural score information for each animal at this stage.


Front Feet Claw Set (FC)

Front Feet Claw Set EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in front feet claw set structure. 

Front Feet Claw Set EBVs are calculated from a subjective assessment of front feet claw set (shape and evenness of claws) by an accredited assessor when animals are less than 750 days of age and are expressed in percentage units. 

Higher Front Feet Claw Set EBVs indicate an animal is expected to produce a higher percentage of progeny with desirable front feet claw structure.

 

 

Rear Leg Hind View (RH)

Rear Leg Hind View EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in rear leg structure when viewed from behind.

Rear Leg Hind View EBVs are calculated from a subjective assessment of rear leg structure when viewed from behind by an accredited assessor when animals are less than 750 days of age and are expressed in percentage units.

Higher Rear Leg Hind View EBVs indicate an animal is expected to produce a higher percentage of progeny with desirable rear leg structure.

 

 

Rear Side Hind View (RS)

Rear Leg Side View EBVs are estimates of genetic differences between animals in rear leg structure when viewed from the side.

Rear Leg Side View EBVs are calculated from a subjective assessment of rear leg structure when viewed from the side by an accredited assessor when animals are less than 750 days of age and are expressed in percentage units.

Higher Rear Leg Side View EBVs indicate an animal is expected to produce a higher percentage of progeny with desirable rear leg structure.
