Buffalo Fly Distribution across Northern Australia
Buffalo fly are present across much of northern Australia, with their behaviour irritating cattle which can cause interrupted feeding and reduced productivity. In situations of sustained or heavy exposure, buffalo fly can cause sores resulting in permanent damage to the animal’s hide. This sore is caused by a small parasitic worm transmitted by the fly.
A number of chemical controls are available to reduce the impact of buffalo fly in addition to strategies which aim to manage fly populations (dung beetles and trapping).
