Angus Youth is currently offering a number of scholarships for youth in the beef industry, with applications currently open for the Kansas State University Scholarship, the Tocal Beef Cattle Assessment School Scholarships and the SMARTBEEF Conference scholarships.
The Kansas State (K-State) University Scholarship allows a young beef cattle enthusiast aged 21-30 the chance to study at one of the best agricultural university’s in the USA. Sponsored by the Angus Australia Foundation, the Kansas State University Scholarship each year provides Angus Australia member with the opportunity to study at Kansas State University for one semester.
2018 recipient of the K-State scholarship, Annabelle Butler, said the following on her recent return from her time abroad completing her time at the prestigious university.
“If I wasn’t at class, I spent my time driving around the country taking in as much of the beef industry as I could, from feedyards to seedstock producers, to stockers and commercial cow-calf producers,” she said.
“My passion for the beef industry has been intensified and I’ve grown a great appreciation for the US beef industry.”

The prestigious Tocal Beef Cattle Assessment Course is celebrating it’s 40th year in 2019, and the Angus Foundation will be supporting five Angus Youth members to attend the three-day course. Taking place September 30 – October 2, the Tocal Beef Cattle Assessment Course is organised by the NSW Angus State Committee and is widely recognised as the most practical and hands on beef cattle selection course of its kind.
Applications are now open for Angus Australia members aged 16 to 30 years allowing for the opportunity to attend the course, where they will be educated on all aspects of the beef industry and work to increase their knowledge and skills in judging and selecting beef cattle.
2018 scholarship recipient Hugh Cochrane said the following of his experience at Tocal, “I really enjoyed the Tocal Cattle Assessment course and gained a range of skills and knowledge that will be instrumental to my decisions going forward as an Angus breeder in the industry.”

The Angus Australia Foundation will provide two Angus Australia members a scholarship to attend the ALFA SMARTBEEF conference to be held in Dalby, QLD, from the 2 – 4 October 2019.
The scholarship aims to recognise two Angus Australia members aged 18-30 with a passion for the Australian feedlot industry. Each scholarship recipient will receive $1500 to assist them in the costs associated with attending the event.
The scholarship gives the recipients the opportunity to increase their knowledge of the Australian feedlot industry and the wider beef industry, to network with likeminded industry professionals and further develop their personal skills.
The 2017 SMARTBEEF scholarship recipient, Connor Ryan, utilised his learnings from his scholarship experience to help with management practices, expressing the opportunity as a great way of meeting new people across the supply chain and taking on board the changes that livestock producer and terminal operations are trying to incorporate in their breeding programs.
