Purebred Angus steers and heifers have gained some outstanding results in a competition that is traditionally dominated by cross bred cattle, taking out Reserve Champion Pen with Angus steers in the 100 day export challenge and Reserve Champion Individual with an Angus heifer in the 70 day domestic challenge.

The Sydney Royal Beef Challenge attracts entries from commercial and stud beef cattle producers from around Australia and is held at Wilga feedlot, Bellata, in North West NSW.

The feedlot based Challenge sees steers and heifers entered in either a 70 days on feed domestic class or 100 days on feed export class. Entries are judged as pens and as individuals.

Ben and Wendy Mayne from Texas Angus, Warialda NSW took out the award for Reserve Champion Export Pen, with a pen of 6 Angus steers.

The Reserve Champion pen, had an average daily weight gain of 2.233kg/per day and placed first for carcase grid and profitability.

The same pen of steers was also awarded a Bronze Medal for taste test.

An interesting side note when analysing the results was to see that Texas Angus had a steer in the competition that received a marble score of 7, 2 scores above any other animal in the competition.

The Mayne’s were not only first time exhibitors in this event, but also first time exhibitors in a feedlot competition were amazed at the results they had achieved with their purebred Angus.

‘We were thrilled with our results and to see our purebred Angus steers and the Doolan’s purebred Angus heifer doing so well, is a credit to the breed,
especially when they were competing against crosses with the added advantage of hybrid vigour’, says Wendy Mayne.

In the domestic competition AV & LM Doolan, Coonabarabran NSW were awarded Reserve Champion individual for an Angus heifer.
