David Plant was a force of nature that will be missed at many levels across regional Australia and throughout the southern hemisphere & US beef industries.
Through his business, Southern Cross Genetics, the coverage of David’s professional work was breathtaking in the geographic scale that he travelled and serviced. Apart from the technical and practical aspects of David’s work he provided a conduit to industry genetics that cut through the technical and focussed on the realities of the individual breeding program at hand.
For those who were fortunate enough to travel with David on his regular trips to New Zealand and the USA; to stand with him at the crush while he bubbled with excitement about his next trip, whether walking with wife Kym and friends, or looking at cattle somewhere; enjoyed the drink and the camaraderie he created after a day on tour, or sat with him after an AI session over that good cup of coffee that he valued so highly, David will be deeply missed.
David had a unique quality of being able to personalise and inject his optimism into any engagement he had. There was never a meeting or conversation with him that didn’t end with a sense that things were better for having been with him. His influence on the world of artificial breeding was immense, as was his impact on the people he touched.
David is survived by his wife Kym, son Luke and daughter Cassie.
