Group to Tour from Paddock to Plate
Twelve Angus Youth members are set to take on a Paddock to Plate experience, touring southern Queensland from October 13-16.
Funded by the Angus Foundation and sponsored by Neogen, the Queensland Production Tour group will kick off their journey in Roma and conclude in Brisbane. The tour itinerary covers every stage of the beef industry and will include aspects such as beef breeding, backgrounding, feedlotting and processing.
Tour organiser, Angus Australia Acting Extension Manager, Nancy Crawshaw said “This comprehensive exposure is especially beneficial to those preparing for future roles in agriculture and food production. The opportunity to observe a supply chain operated with tight control and high standards boosts participants’ competencies and confidence”.
The touring group will visit standout locations like the Roma Saleyards, which throughputs over 400,000 heads of cattle every year. Additional stops include U8J Angus, ACC Brinley Park Feedlot, Four Daughters Feedlot, ACC Abattoir in Brisbane, a commercial property tour and a state-of-the-art laboratory tour.
Nancy said “Each site has been selected to provide a valuable perspective on the journey from paddock to plate, emphasising the processes and people responsible for world-class beef production”.
Angus Australia was very pleased with the interest from Angus Youth members wanting to engage in this experience.
“We opened expressions of interest in July, and were quickly presented with the challenge to select just twelve participants” said Nancy. “The Angus Youth membership saw the opportunity to build valuable connections, share ideas and receive information from professionals who have shaped the beef sector”.
The twelve Angus Youth members attending the tour are as follows:
Lucy Goodeve: I have worked with Angus cattle on both sides of the Tasman in commercial and stud settings. Now based in northern NSW with Palgrove Pastoral, I work with Ultrablack, Angus, and Brangus breeding herds. I have a keen interest in genetics and animal performance data, and how these can be applied to lift profitability and efficiency across the supply chain. I’m passionate about the beef industry, building strong connections, and learning from others. At the start of my career, I’m committed to contributing to the long-term success and sustainability of the Angus breed.
Felicity Webb: I’m 22 years old from Oberon, NSW. I have recently moved to Wagga NSW, to study a degree in Agriculture Business Management at CSU. I grew up in a hardworking farming family who operates in beef and wool enterprises. I currently am employed by Elders Wagga Wagga as a casual staff member working in the cattle and very large sheep saleyards. I am very interested in the Agriculture sector, wanting to grow as a person and develop mentally and physically to make farming and operating in the 21st century as safe, affordable and successful as possible. Teaching interests me as a young woman to help educate up and coming generations as I believe education is the stepping stones for the young mind.
Jaxon Baulch: I am 20 years old and have grown up in the agricultural industry having lived on a farm my whole life and my grandparents run an agricultural contracting business. I spend my spare time working on the home farm doing anything from feeding out to drenching. I enjoy spending time on the farm driving around checking stock with my dog, and fishing and camping when I get a spare moment. I have my own little mob of Angus calves and have been rearing my own calves since I was 15. I hope to take over the family farm in the future.
Becky Bulle: I am a young farmer in Southern NSW. I have been working in our family business, ‘Ardrossan Angus’ for over 2 years now, becoming increasingly involved in our breeding program. Since being a part of our family business, I have learnt the importance of producing industry-relevant genetics with a strong focus on structural soundness, fertility and performance for our clients. With a strong interest in data analysis and livestock performance, I focus on strategies that drive profitability, whilst ensuring long-term herd longevity is forefront. I am passionate about combining tradition with innovation to support growth in our operation.
Gemma Bulleid: I am 19 and currently doing a working gap year between finishing school and furthering my studies. I have taken a gap year as much to be sure about my choice of further education as to gain practical insight into the industry I am passionate about. I think it is a key part to contributing to this industry is to have both practical and ‘on paper’ knowledge and learn from people working the commercial and stud farms.
Liam Herbert: I am a young farmer who is now living in NZ, but I originally came from a family farm in north Wiltshire England. I started out in New Zealand contracting in Taupo where I spent 4 years. I am now located in the Wairarapa on a sheep and beef trade property. I live and breathe farming wich takes up most of my days however I like to spend my spare time camping, hunting and young farmers club activities.
Claire Warburton: I am a Senior Rural Banker with 10 years of experience in the finance industry, specialising in agribusiness lending. My passion lies in supporting primary producers and being part of rural communities, where I enjoy building strong, lasting relationships with clients. Throughout my career, I have maintained a record of outstanding client service reflecting my commitment to delivering practical and trusted financial solutions.
Sophia Moore: Born in the United States, I lived across four states before relocating to New Zealand with my family. Raised in town without a farming background I developed a strong passion for agriculture. Homeschooled until high school, where I received the Prime Minister’s Vocational Excellence Award for my dedication and practical experience at Rissington Cattle Company. I completed a Diploma in Agriculture in 2022 and a Diploma in Farm Management in 2023 at Lincoln University, actively participating in the Young Farmers and Hunting Clubs. I am currently pursuing a degree in Agribusiness at Massey University, while working part time on farm.
Fraser Beaney: Until recently I had been managing a cropping farm in Denman, NSW, while also working on my family’s Angus backgrounding block near Gresford on weekends. I have recently moved to Chinchilla and started working with Glenoch Angus across all their properties and am eager to further my understanding of the Queensland Angus production system. I am also currently studying a Bachelor of Agribusiness, remote part-time, through the University of New England. I have great interest in Angus cattle production systems and would like that to be the career path I go down, whether that is as a producer or someone who helps producers.
Marley Blake: I am a 22 year old currently studying a Bachelor of Agricultural business management at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. Although I didn’t grow up in a farming family, I have found a passion for the beef cattle industry after working in the NT. After completing a beef cattle certificate online whilst working I made the decision to further my studies. I am looking forward to being a part of this tour group to learn as much as I could and further my knowledge within the Angus beef industry.
Jye Clark: I am 24 years old, and did an apprenticeship as a boilermaker got I finished by the time I was 20. I decided I wanted a change into the beef cattle industry. I worked at a feedlot and contractor for bit over a year and was lucky enough to end up on an Angus pastoral company at Holbrook in NSW about 2 and a half years ago. I moved into a 2IC position there, and am looking to further my knowledge and work my way up.
Lily Goode: I am 19 years old from Tarrone in south west Victoria. I have been born and bred on farms and have had a passion for the industry. I have completed my certificate 2 and 3 in Agriculture and am currently studying for my certificate 4 and am enrolled for my diploma in agriculture next year and can’t wait to start! I would love to one day breed my own Angus cattle and provide premium meat to our consumers. I am excited about this opportunity.
