Update for users of Angus HeiferSELECTDecember 2025

Two months on from the release of the NEW Interim Genomic Predictions, we want to thank you for the feedback you have shared so far. Your input is helping us refine and strengthen the way we deliver genomic information to members. 

A key theme from your feedback has been the need for greater precision when identifying animals at the top or bottom end of the genetic distribution—particularly when making decisions such as selecting the top 10% or culling the bottom 30%. In response, we are updating the reporting scale for both trait-based predictions and the Total Value. 

What’s Changing? 

  • More Detailed Trait Reporting (Deciles)
    Trait-based genomic predictions will now be reported in 10% increments (deciles) rather than 20% increments (quintiles). This allows for finer discrimination among animals and better supports selection decisions aligned with your breeding objectives. 
  • More Refined Total Value Reporting (Percentiles)
    The Interim Total Value will now be reported in 1% increments (percentiles). This offers significantly improved resolution when ranking females across your herd. 

Where to Access Your Updated Results 

These updates will be applied directly to your existing results file. As with previous reporting, your data will be available in the download files section of angus.tech, under the DNA Services tab, in the file named: 

“XXX-interim-genomic-predictions.csv”
(where XXX = your member ID) 

As genotypes are processed and added to the analysis, newly available results will continue to appear in the same CSV file. 

In Case You Missed It: Key Details about the NEW Interim Genomic Predictions 

To ensure all members remain informed, here is a brief summary of the major updates released with the initial rollout of the NEW Interim Genomic Predictions: 

  • Interim Genomic Predictions Released
    NEW Interim Predictions, initially released in October 2025, are now based on all genotypes and phenotypes currently in the Angus Australia database, supporting improved alignment with your sire selection strategy and enabling you to track genetic progress more effectively. 
  • Traits Reported
    Results include a mix of familiar and new traits across cow–calf, carcase and mature cow traits.  

Trait descriptions are detailed in the table below.  

 

Additional traits—such as Calving Ease, Heifer Conception, ADG, DFI, Ossification and ImmuneDEX—may be added over time. 

 New Reporting Format (0–100 Scale)

  • Initial predictions were provided as deciles (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100), representing relative performance for each trait. Higher values indicate “more/favourable,” although what is desirable will depend on your breeding objective. 

E.g. Higher Weaning Weight (WW) genomic predictions indicate the animal is expected to produce progeny with heavier live weights at 200 days of age, due to superior growth potential. However, for Birth Weight (BW), higher genomic predictions indicate the animal is expected to produce progeny with lower birth weights and have fewer calving difficulties (i.e. greater calving ease). 

 

  • Interim Total Value Introduced
    A new Total Value, reported in percentiles, includes emphasis on Birth Weight (2%), Weaning Weight (14%), Yearling Weight (12%), Mature Cow Weight (5%), Carcase Weight (30%), Milk (7%), MSA Marbling (30%).

 BreedCHECK

  • Interim BreedCHECK results assigns animals as Angus (87.5% or higher Angus content), AngusCross (below 87.5% but higher than 50% Angus content), or non-Angus (50% or less Angus). More detailed reporting will return in future, if you would like more in depth results in the meantime, please contact Jake Bourne (jake.bourne@angusaustralia.com.au).
