Angus Australia releases Angus GenetiQ across all animals in the Angus Australia database.
Today, Angus Australia has released Angus GenetiQ across all animals in the Angus Australia database. This marks a historic milestone in the evolution of genetic evaluation for Angus cattle in Australia. Members can now view Angus GenetiQ Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) alongside TACE EBVs for their animals.
A key transformation in late 2025 was the launch of Angus GenetiQ. This is a completely new genetic evaluation system for Angus cattle, developed internally by Angus Australia over the past four years. In September 2025, the Angus Australia Board resolved to implement Angus GenetiQ for our commercial genomic products, HeiferSELECT and SteerSELECT.
The strategic direction of Angus Australia has been to develop an internally governed genetic evaluation platform known as Angus GenetiQ. A combination of scientific, commercial, and long-term strategic considerations has driven this decision. Angus GenetiQ provides enhanced statistical modelling, streamlined data integration and closer alignment with emerging global best practice in genetic evaluation.
Among Angus Australia’s key strategic initiatives has been the creation of an internally governed genetic evaluation platform, Angus GenetiQ. A combination of scientific, commercial and long-term strategic considerations has driven this decision. Angus GenetiQ provides enhanced statistical modelling, streamlined data integration and closer alignment with emerging global best practice in genetic evaluation.
Angus GenetiQ is an entirely separate software suite from Breedplan, developed using a different modelling framework. It delivers efficiencies in run time, evaluation frequency, operating cost and the speed with which research can be translated into usable breeding values. Importantly, Angus GenetiQ demonstrates strong alignment with TACE; however, it is not intended to produce identical results, nor should it. Independent yet aligned systems provide robustness, resilience and innovation capacity.
The benefits of Angus GenetiQ include:
Angus GenetiQ was initially implemented to calculate Mature Body Condition Score and Mature Cow Height. It was additionally used to calculate two Research Breeding Values: Coat Type and MSA Marbling.
These remain in place and have now been expanded to include the following traits:
Angus GenetiQ will operate in parallel with Breedplan. Members can view both Angus GenetiQ breeding values and TACE EBVs for their animals within angus.tech, presented on separate tabs for clarity and transparency.
Each trait currently published, or under consideration for release, has been rigorously assessed for scientific validity, alignment between systems, and suitability for ongoing publication.
During 2026, additional Angus GenetiQ traits will be progressively released as they are evaluated and confirmed to meet Angus Australia’s required scientific and operational standards.
A key advantage of Angus GenetiQ lies in the value it delivers to commercial Angus producers. The Angus GenetiQ breeding values calculated for seedstock animals are aligned with values in the commercial HeiferSELECT and SteerSELECT products. This alignment is critical, as it will enable the commercial industry to make more accurate genetic selection of registered Angus bulls to achieve measurable genetic improvement across the Angus production system.
The Angus Australia Board of Directors and Management affirm their ongoing commitment to serving members and supporting the long-term profitability, efficiency and sustainability of Angus cattle production in Australia. This staged implementation approach has been deliberately adopted to minimise disruption, support education, enable feedback and maximise transparency as the platform continues to evolve.
Angus GenetiQ represents a significant step forward for the Angus breed and reflects Angus Australia’s commitment to innovation, independence and member-focused leadership.
