Applications Open for the Matthew George Young Stockman Award
Young people with a passion for agriculture are being encouraged to apply for the Matthew George Young Stockman Award, with applications opening soon.
Facilitated by the Ballarat Foundation, the Award supports young people aged 21 to 30 who are committed to building a future in the beef cattle industry. It provides a unique opportunity to undertake international travel and study, gaining hands on experience with leading breeding programs, developments and practices.
Since 2009, the Award has supported 16 young industry leaders to travel, learn and bring new knowledge back to Australia. Past recipients have gone on to build careers across breeding, genetics and livestock production, contributing to the strength and innovation of the agricultural sector.
The Award honours the legacy of Matthew George, a passionate young stockman from the Ballarat region whose life was tragically cut short in 2007. Matthew had a deep interest in cattle breeding and genetics and dreamed of travelling the world to learn from leading operations.
Ballarat Foundation CEO Andrew Eales said the Award continues to play an important role in supporting the next generation of industry leaders. “This award is about backing young people who are committed to building a future in agriculture. It recognises the effort they’re already putting in and gives them the opportunity to build their skills and confidence as they take the next step. Supporting the next generation is important for the future of the industry and for regional communities like ours.”
Recent recipients have undertaken international study tours across the United States and Europe, gaining hands on experience with leading ranches, genetic facilities and breeding programs. These experiences provide practical skills, global connections and insights that are brought back to strengthen the Australian industry.
Recipients return with knowledge that strengthens breeding practices, genetics and productivity across the Australian beef industry.
