Final Call: ASBP Cohort 17 Nominations Close 2 August
Angus Australia members have until 2 August 2026 to nominate bulls for Cohort 17 of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP).
For breeders looking to strengthen the relevance and accuracy of genetic information within their own herd, participation in the ASBP provides benefits well beyond the individual bull nominated.
Through the program, nominated sires develop close genetic linkage with the Angus Australia genomic reference population. This helps ensure future research and genetic evaluation outcomes are highly relevant to participating herds and the genetics they are producing.
Participation can also improve the accuracy of a sire’s Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), particularly for hard-to-measure traits and traits that are expressed or measured later in life, including carcase performance, female reproduction and feed intake.
What could participation deliver for your herd?
By nominating a bull for Cohort 17, members have the opportunity to:
For newer members in particular, the ASBP presents an opportunity to connect their breeding program with Australia’s most comprehensive and long-running progeny test programs.
Approximately 20 to 25 Angus bulls will be selected for Cohort 17, with the joining program scheduled to commence in September 2026. Selected sires will be joined to approximately 1,800 Angus females across Angus Australia cooperator herds through one round of fixed-time artificial insemination.
Sire nominations will be evaluated by the ASBP Consultative Committee, considering each bull’s current EBVs and selection indexes, genetic diversity and linkage, performance potential and likely future contribution to the Angus seedstock industry and broader Angus population.
Members considering nominating a sire are encouraged to act now, as nominations close on 2 August July 2026.
No late nominations will be accepted due to the timeframe required to prepare for the Cohort 17 joining program.
