Nominations Open for Cohort 17 of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program

Drive genetic progress. Benchmark with the best. Nominate your sire for Cohort 17 today.

Angus Australia is pleased to invite members to nominate bulls for Cohort 17 of the Angus Sire Benchmarking Program (ASBP).

The ASBP provides Angus breeders with a unique opportunity to benchmark the performance of their sires, while contributing to genetic improvement and enhancing the overall quality of the Angus breed through rigorous data collection, research and analysis.

For Cohort 17, Angus Australia is seeking to select approximately 20–25  Angus bulls for the joining program, which is scheduled to commence from September 2026. The sires will be joined to approximately 1800 Angus females across Angus Australia’s cooperator herds via one round of fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI).

Program Benefits

Joining the ASBP offers a range of benefits, including the opportunity to:

  • Participate in world-leading research in areas such as new meat quality traits, new fertility traits, methane emissions phenotyping and health and resilience traits.
  • Develop close genetic linkage to the Angus Australia genomic reference population, ensuring research and genetic evaluation outcomes are highly relevant to your herd.
  • Participate in one of Australia’s most comprehensive and long-running genomic reference population programs, which includes high-quality data and large contemporary groups.
  • Improve the accuracy of your sires Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), particularly for ‘hard-to-measure’ traits and traits measured later in life such as carcass, female reproduction and feed intake.
  • Receive progeny-average values and sire rankings from within the ASBP traits collected in large contemporary groups across a range of different environments on the Eastern seaboard of Australia.

Nomination Evaluation Criteria

Sire nominations are evaluated by the ASBP Consultative Committee against a range of selection criteria, including:

  • The sires current Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and selection indexes.
  • Genetic diversity and linkages.
  • Estimated performance potential for the ASBP cooperator herds and commercial supply chain partners.
  • Current and/or potential future use and impact in the Angus seedstock industry.
  • Potential impact on the broader Angus population.
