WA producers get hands-on at Driving Better Breeding Decisions
The West Australian branch of Angus Australia came together with participants from across WA at Rhodes Pastoral Pty Ltd, Boyup Brook, to participate in a ‘Driving Better Breeding Decisions’ Workshop. Designed to help commercial cattle producers make informed breeding and herd management decisions, the practical hands-on workshop gave the participants the tools to move forward with their enterprises in the future.
Angus Australia’s Extension Officer Dr Brad Hine hosted a session on genetics, genomics and navigating Angus.Tech. This was followed by Bridget Watkins, South West WA Regional Soil Coordinator, who discussed optimising nutrition for the breeding herd.
From there John Curtin, Cattle Manager at Rhodes Pastoral, provided an insight into the Rhodes Pastoral beef operation, an on-farm tour of the operation was followed by an interactive panel discussion and Q&A session.
Mark Muir and Andrew Kuss, WA Angus team, also ran a structural assessment workshop. Following this practical section of the day, the participants examined how genomic information can support commercial replacement heifer selection using Angus HeiferSELECT.
