MateSel Now Handles Multi-Sire Joining
If multi-sire joining is already part of how you run your breeding program, we’ve got some exciting news; MateSel can now build your sire mating-groups for you.
Multi-sire (or “syndicate sire”) mating has long been a practical reality for many Angus breeders, whether it’s for paddock joining, AI backup groups, or moving mobs of bulls and females through the system. Until now, putting those groups together, balancing trait profiles, managing inbreeding risk, and thinking about which bulls complement each other has largely meant manually working through pedigrees and comparing EBVs animal by animal.
Not anymore.
MateSel’s new Mixed Mating Groups (MMG) function takes the guesswork (or hard work) out of syndicate mating. Instead of pairing individual sires to individual dams, MateSel now assembles entire groups of males and females for joining and it does it the same way MateSel always has: by focusing on the outcome you actually want in the progeny, not just matching up similar-looking parents. You tell it what you’re chasing; a specific performance trait profile, reduced progeny inbreeding, or even targeted marker outcomes and MateSel works out the group makeup that gets you there, group sizes and all.
That means smarter joining decisions, better-managed inbreeding, and mating groups genuinely built around genetic gain, not just convenience. DNA parentage testing on the resulting progeny keeps your pedigree recording accurate, just as it does today.
Not using MateSel yet? If you’re already running a multi-sire system but haven’t made the switch to MateSel, this is the perfect time to start. It’s a tool that can help manage inbreeding while lifting your herd’s rate of genetic gain in exactly the mating scenario many herds already use.
