Industry Update: Changes to Angus Breed Content Announced

Members may have seen recent media coverage regarding updates Angus Breed Content.

The Australian Meat Industry Language and Standards Committee (AMILSC) has confirmed revisions to the Animal Raising Claims Framework for Beef Production in Australia, including the introduction of a new Angus 50 (F1) program, establishing a minimum 50% Angus breed content requirement for certain Angus-related trade descriptions.

The changes were endorsed following a period of industry consultation and discussion, with the updated framework intended to provide clearer guidance around the use of Angus breed claims across the supply chain.

Key elements of the updated framework

Under the revised criteria, three recognised Angus breed claim categories will apply:

  • Angus 50 (F1) – minimum 50% Angus parentage
  • Angus 75 (F2) – minimum 75% Angus parentage
  • Angus 100 (Pure Angus) – minimum 100% Angus parentage

The introduction of the Angus 50 category is the most significant change and aligns Australian trade description standards with requirements used in major export markets such as the United States.

Importantly, existing requirements for Angus 75 and Angus 100 programs remain unchanged, including the phenotypic standards applied to those categories.

The framework continues to be administered by AUS-MEAT, which oversees the application and verification of trade descriptions to ensure product claims remain accurate and consistent across domestic and export markets.

What this means for producers

For cattle producers, accurate breed identification remains essential when completing National Vendor Declarations (NVDs).

With the introduction of the Angus 50 program, producers are encouraged to ensure parentage is clearly recorded where applicable so livestock can be correctly described and potentially qualify for relevant branded beef programs.

Maintaining accurate documentation supports regulatory compliance and helps maximise value opportunities across the supply chain.

What this means for processors

Processors operating Angus-branded programs will continue to be required to apply approved trade descriptions and maintain approved livestock sourcing programs in line with AUS-MEAT standards.

The updated criteria establish clearer thresholds for parentage claims, with trade descriptions such as Angus 50, Angus 75 and Angus 100 applied according to the minimum breed content requirements.
