South Australian Cattle Assessment School Returns in October 2026
Angus Australia is pleased to announce the return of the SA Cattle Assessment School, to be held on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 October 2026 at the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus, Roseworthy, South Australia.
Following the success of the 2025 program, which brought together participants from across Australia for two practical and engaging days of cattle assessment, the 2026 school will again provide an opportunity to sharpen commercial cattle assessment skills and build confidence in making informed breeding and selection decisions.
Designed for participants across all experience levels, the two-day workshop is particularly valuable for those looking to better understand how cattle are assessed for market suitability, long-term productivity and breeding performance. Whether you are a young breeder, commercial producer, stud operator, livestock agent, student or industry professional, the school offers practical knowledge that can be applied directly on farm or within the broader beef supply chain.
Over the course of the program, participants will work through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on assessment in the yards. The school will focus on the key traits that influence cattle performance and market suitability, including structure, constitution, muscle, fat cover, temperament, replacement female selection and bull selection.
Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of how to use genetic selection tools, including Estimated Breeding Values, and how to apply them alongside visual assessment when making breeding decisions. A key focus of the program will be helping participants develop clear breeding objectives that align with their own business goals and target markets.
The format is designed to be practical, challenging and highly relevant. Participants will assess cattle classes against defined scenarios and market specifications, strengthening their ability to observe, compare and justify their decisions. The program also encourages discussion with experienced over-judges, facilitators and fellow participants, creating a valuable learning environment for those wanting to broaden their commercial cattle knowledge.
The SA Cattle Assessment School draws on the tried and tested principles of practical beef cattle assessment, with a strong emphasis on connecting visual appraisal, market requirements and genetic information. Last year’s program received outstanding feedback, with participants highlighting the value of gaining a stronger understanding of the commercial drivers that influence breeding and selection decisions.
The University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy Campus provides an ideal setting for the school, with access to quality facilities and cattle that allow participants to work through a broad range of assessment scenarios. The program also benefits from the support of industry contributors, cattle donors and experienced facilitators who help deliver a realistic and valuable learning experience.
