How and When to Collect Pinkeye Scores

Pinkeye scores can be recorded if you have a pinkeye outbreak on farm.

Take the first recording for all animals in the affected mob(s) when the pinkeye outbreak is first noticed.

Use the scoring guide and record all animals in the mob(s) for both affected and unaffected animals.

Preferably, score all animals multiple times to fit in with your management practices and treatment protocols.

Pinkeye scores can be collected in any age group at any time.

0 Unaffected – No pinkeye infection or scaring present

1 Mild – corresponds to tearing

2 Moderate – corresponds to redness or a small central ulcer

3 Severe – corresponds to severe ulceration or protrusion of the eye

4 Healing/Scar – corresponds to a blue or white eye lesion without tearing or redness which means the eye is healing or a scar has formed

  • Animals can be scored using the pinkeye recording excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet has been designed so that it may also benefit in keeping track of treatment records during an outbreak situation.
  • It is important to record management group for any animals or group of animals have been treated differently.
