Angus HeiferSELECT genomic predictions rank animals relative to the current reference population (Angus and Angus-influenced animals born between 2019 and 2023). The age of this reference population will continue to be updated annually.

Genomic predictions are reported on a 1-100 percentile scale, where:

  • 1 represents the top 1% of the population
  • 100 represents the bottom of the population

This means that lower percentile values (closer to 1) indicate animals ranked higher for that trait and are generally considered more favourable.

However, it is important to note that while for most genomic predictions it is generally considered more desirable to have lower percentile values (higher ranking animals), this is not always the case. The optimum genomic prediction will depend on your individual breeding objectives and the direction in which you are aiming to move your herd.

For example:

  • lower percentile for Weaning Weight (WW) indicates animals with the genetic merit for heavier growth.
  • lower percentile for Birth Weight (BW) indicates animals with the genetic merit for lighter birth weights and improved calving ease.
  • lower percentile for Mature Cow Weight indicates animals with the genetic merit for heavier mature cow weights. Heavier mature weights are associated with higher feed and maintenance costs, but conversely higher returns for cull cows.
