Angus SteerSELECT genomic predictions rank animals relative to the current reference population (Angus and Angus-influenced animals born between 2020 and 2024). The age of this reference population will continue to be updated annually.

Genomic predictions are reported on a 1-100 percentile scale, where:

  • 1 represents the top 1% of the population
  • 100 represents the bottom of the population

Percentile values indicate the genetic merit of an animal for a specified trait, relative to the benchmarking population. In most cases a lower percentile (closer to 1) is considered desirable; however, the optimal direction for any given trait depends on your production system, supply chain and market specifications you are targeting.

For example:

  • A lower percentile for Yearling Weight (WW) indicates animals with the genetic merit for heavier growth.
  • A lower percentile for MSA Marbling (MBL) indicates animals with the genetic merit to produce carcases containing more intramuscular fat.
  • lower percentile for Rib Fat (RIB) indicates animals with the genetic merit to produce carcases with greater fat depth.
